Canal du Midi

The Canal du Midi is a network of waterways 240 kms long and together with the Canal de Garonne links the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.  It was built between 1667 and 1694.  In 1996 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.  From Toulouse, through Carcassonne, it links with Narbonne via the Canal de la Robine, and finally reaches the Mediterranean at Sète.  It is possible to hire boats and you could even recreate part of Rick Stein’s French Odyssey.  The nearest place to see the canal from us is either Narbonne - the Canal de la Robine or Carcassonne or Beziers.
