Carcassonne

The medieval Cité of Carcassonne became famous for its role in the Albigensian Crusades when it was a Cathar stronghold.  Its inhabitants were forced to surrender in August 1209 by Simon de Montfort.  At one time it was a border citadel between France and Aragon.  Today after restoration in the 19th century, it is a World Heritage site.  Inside the walls are quaint streets with shops and restaurants and museums.

Carcassonne is about one hour’s drive from Durban Corbières and parking is outside the walled Cité.
