There are many fascinating sites to see in the region. Driving west towards Arques and Rennes les Bains and Rennes le Chateau. The former is a spa town. The latter gained fame in novels such as The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown and Sepulchre by Kate Mosse because of a story put about by a local in the 1950’s about hidden treasure being found by Bérenger Saunière and this led to other claims involving the Priory of Sion all of which helped build up an aura about the place. Another book by Mosse, Labyrinth, also features Carcassonne and the Cathars. This whole region was at the heart of the Cathar religion.
Lagrasse is on the river Orbieu and the main site is the Benedictine Abbey: It is also a very pretty village. There are good restaurants and wine cellars there as well. It is about 45 minutes drive.
Sète is a pretty town at the end of the Canal du Midi, and all alongside the canal are numerous fish restaurants. It is about 2 hours away.
Montpellier, further afield, is well worth a visit if you have a spare day. The historic centre is pedestrianised with many cobbled streets. There are museums, churches and a botanical garden.
